floy Tapp
Born and raised in Owensboro, KY. Graduated from Owensboro Senior High in 1961. Went to Brescia College from 1961 to 1966, was recipient of the Brescia Senior Scholarship Award. Graduated with a double major in math and physics. Turned down offers from Xerox, IBM, and US Atomic Energy Commission to work as a flight kinetics engineer for McDonald Douglas Aerospace Division in Culver City, CA. What I really wanted was to surf instead of shovel snow. When I interviewed with Xerox and IBM they had 31 feet deep snow drifts. In October of 1967, Boeing in Huntsville, AL offered me the job of stability analyst on all the Saturn/Apollo Flights. In 1969, I started racing motorcycles and built Huntsville Motorcycle Raceway, a crushed limestone flat track. Turned pro in 1970 and made Expert by 1972. Dirt track motorcycle racing has been a part of my life from 1969 until now. I have 4 vintage race bikes and 2 that has raced on the National Circuit. After the last launch I bought a motorcycle dealership in Gadsden, AL and became an entrepreneur. I have owned 15 businesses without a loser.
Started sailing in 1988 on Kentucky Lake. Bought our dream boat in 1992 and started preparing to retire in 1994 when our youngest son went off to college. The material for the “Saga of the Sailing Hillbillies” started in 1992.
